President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the two representatives will travel to both nations carrying a specific proposal designed to halt the hostilities that have persisted for four years. Trump stated that the envoys were dispatched to determine if a viable agreement could be reached, expressing optimism that there is a “good chance” of success.
The itinerary marks a significant shift in engagement strategy, with the capital of Kyiv designated as the first stop for the American delegation. This decision comes amidst an intensification of Russian military operations, which have recently subjected the Ukrainian capital to relentless aerial bombardments. Despite the dangerous security environment, Witkoff and Kushner have previously visited Moscow, establishing a channel of communication that they now intend to leverage alongside direct talks in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the impending arrival of the US team during his evening address on Thursday. He revealed that he had received official confirmation from Washington regarding meetings scheduled for both Moscow and Kyiv within the coming days. Zelensky emphasized the critical nature of this development, noting that he had spoken with Witkoff and Kushner earlier in the week to finalize the dates. He stressed the importance of maintaining active and effective engagement from the United States during this pivotal moment.
