Gaza Health System Under Immense Pressure
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, stated on Friday that the Gaza Strip continues to face a general humanitarian and health emergency. This assessment comes despite the passage of approximately one year since the ceasefire agreement was implemented. The warning was issued while he participated in the proceedings of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, currently taking place in New York.
During his remarks at the assembly, Ghebreyesus emphasized that the healthcare system in Gaza is enduring immense pressure. He noted that humanitarian and health needs remain extremely high across the territory. The WHO chief stressed the urgent necessity of ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches Gaza quickly, sustainably, and without any obstacles.
Demands for Medical Infrastructure Rehabilitation
The Director-General called for the immediate entry of medical supplies and equipment into the sector. He further urged for the rehabilitation of health facilities and the reopening of patient referral pathways. Additionally, he advocated for expanding the scope of medical evacuations to address the critical situation on the ground.
Warnings from Local Authorities
These international concerns align with warnings issued earlier by local officials regarding the deepening crisis. Ismail al-Thawabta, the Director-General of the Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip, had previously cautioned about the worsening humanitarian situation in the region. He attributed this deterioration to the reduction of international aid programs.
Al-Thawabta highlighted that hundreds of thousands of people are being deprived of food due to these cuts. Furthermore, he pointed out a significant decline in support for hospitals, specifically regarding essential fuel supplies and healthcare services. These factors have compounded the difficulties faced by the already strained health infrastructure in the enclave.
