At least 11 individuals lost their lives and 18 others sustained injuries following a suicide attack utilizing a vehicle packed with explosives against a security checkpoint in northern Pakistan. The incident was confirmed by both police authorities and rescue teams on Saturday.
Saifullah Khan, a police official based in Dera Ismail Khan, provided details to the Associated Press regarding the timing and nature of the assault. He stated that the attack occurred around midday at a barrier jointly operated by elements of the police, army, and customs services. According to Khan, a man suspected of being a suicide bomber breached the checkpoint using the explosive-laden vehicle, resulting in the deaths of 11 people.
Rescue operations were immediately launched in the aftermath of the blast. Bilal Faizi, a member of one of the teams involved in the recovery efforts, reported to the news agency that eleven bodies had been retrieved from the site. He further confirmed that eighteen other individuals were injured in the explosion. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
This incident marks another escalation in violence within the region. Earlier in the month, at least 31 people were killed, including sixteen police officers, during a coordinated assault involving armed gunmen and a suicide bombing targeting a central police headquarters in Kohat. Kohat is located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has a population of approximately 220,000 residents.
Pakistan continues to accuse extremist groups operating from Afghanistan of being responsible for the rising tide of attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southern border province of Balochistan. The Afghan government under the Taliban denies any involvement or complicity in these cross-border incidents. These mutual accusations have fueled sharp diplomatic tensions and led to armed clashes between the two neighboring countries. In response to the alleged safe havens, Pakistan has carried out significant aerial strikes, stating that they targeted militants on Afghan soil.
