Urgent Appeal for Coordinated Humanitarian Action
Ismail al-Thawabta, the Director General of the Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip, launched an urgent appeal on Wednesday directed at the international community, donor agencies, and local institutions. He called for the unification of efforts and the acceleration of humanitarian responses to protect and shelter displaced families in Gaza ahead of the onset of winter. Al-Thawabta emphasized that the approaching cold season, characterized by rain and low temperatures, necessitates a clear priority plan that moves beyond traditional emergency responses.
Threats to Vulnerable Populations
The official warned that the worsening conditions in displacement camps pose a direct threat to the lives and dignity of displaced persons, particularly the most vulnerable groups. These include widows, orphans, the elderly, the sick, and individuals with disabilities. He noted that the Ministry of Social Development is continuously monitoring the situation in these camps and shelters, coordinating with local authorities and specialized committees to identify growing humanitarian needs and ensure the provision of minimum living standards.
Specific Needs and Infrastructure Deficits
Al-Thawabta outlined immediate requirements, including the provision of rain-resistant tents, winter blankets, clothing, and safe heating methods. He also stressed the need for materials to insulate tents against water leakage and humidity. Furthermore, he urged the immediate preparation of drainage networks and pathways to manage rainwater, alongside enhanced hygiene and public health supplies. The official highlighted the necessity of logistical and technical support for shelter committees and field teams.
Call for Prioritized Aid Distribution
He called upon the government, municipalities, and both local and international entities to expedite interventions and establish a priority map based on the scale of need and vulnerability levels. This approach aims to ensure aid reaches the most needy families and prevents the deterioration of the humanitarian situation as weather conditions worsen. Al-Thawabta described the protection of displaced families as a shared ethical and humanitarian responsibility, warning that any delay in response would multiply the suffering of thousands of families living in camps lacking basic protection measures.
Context of Ongoing Crisis
This warning coincides with the fourth winter since the war began, during which large numbers of Gazans continue to rely on displacement camps amid extremely difficult living conditions. The widespread destruction of infrastructure has led to significant damage and loss of many displacement tents. Concurrently, the World Health Organization has cautioned about escalating health risks in Gaza due to overcrowding, deteriorating environmental conditions, poor water quality, pollution, and waste accumulation as the rainy season approaches.
