Egypt Summons Colombian Charge d’Affaires Over Jerusalem Embassy

17 October، 2026

Egypt Registers Strong Protest Against Colombia

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Colombian charge d’affaires in Cairo on Friday to express Egypt’s strong objection and absolute rejection of Colombia’s move to open its embassy in occupied Jerusalem. A source familiar with the matter stated that this diplomatic action was taken to convey Cairo’s firm stance against what it considers a unilateral step incompatible with the city’s legal and historical status.

According to the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat news agency, the source emphasized that such measures are null and void, carrying no legal effect whatsoever. The Egyptian side stressed during the meeting that irresponsible steps of this nature would have negative repercussions on international efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in the region, potentially exacerbating tensions.

Cairo insisted on the necessity of respecting the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem and called for refraining from any unilateral actions that could undermine prospects for peace based on the two-state solution. The source noted that these moves violate relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.

Arab League Mandate Implementation

This diplomatic summons follows the implementation of paragraph 10 of the Arab League Council of Ambassadors resolution passed last week. The resolution mandated the recall of ambassadors from Colombia to member states of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to inform them of a protest message regarding Colombia’s illegal decision to establish its embassy in Jerusalem and its impact on bilateral relations with Bogota.

The Egyptian government’s action aligns with broader regional coordination to oppose the normalization of diplomatic ties with Jerusalem as an embassy location, maintaining that such decisions contravene established international frameworks governing the status of the city.
