Mauritania PM Outlines Government Agenda to Parliament, Pledges Boost in Purchasing Power

7 November، 2026

Nouakchott: On Saturday, Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djeiy presented the general policy of his government before the national parliament. In his address, he emphasized that enhancing the population’s purchasing power is a central pillar of the upcoming government agenda.

Ould Djeiy stated that the national economy has maintained an average growth rate exceeding 4 percent during the period from 2019 to 2026. He projected that this upward trend would continue with rates surpassing 4 percent until 2029, despite facing international and regional hurdles. To mitigate the impact of global inflation on living standards, the government is prioritizing urgent measures. These include fixing price caps on essential goods, expanding cash transfer programs, and strengthening social protection systems.

The outlined plan focuses on launching a comprehensive program to stimulate economic and agricultural activity in internal regions. Additionally, it aims at developing major cities, reforming waste collection systems, and improving urban infrastructure. The Prime Minister announced the initiation of drafting a long-term national vision extending to the horizon of 2060. This initiative runs parallel to ongoing administrative and institutional reforms, as well as efforts to follow up on the outcomes of the Comprehensive National Dialogue to enhance governance.

Security strategies were also highlighted, with a focus on border protection and continued government efforts to combat irregular migration. Regarding foreign policy, Ould Djeiy reaffirmed Mauritania’s commitment to an active stance based on good neighborliness, dialogue, and support for just causes internationally, notably the Palestinian issue. He expressed hope that the anticipated national dialogue would lead to a broad consensus on major national issues, aligning with the aspirations of the Mauritanian people.

This presentation follows a significant political shift in September last year, when President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani renewed confidence in Ould Djeiy and tasked him with forming a new government. This decision came shortly after Ould Djeiy submitted the resignation of his previous cabinet to President Ghazouani. The resignation was triggered by the release of the final report from the Independent Commission of Inquiry into two fire incidents at the main electrical transformation stations in Nouakchott on August 21 and 22.

The presidential office published a summary of the investigation report, which concluded that the fires were caused by electrical connections imported by a private company that did not meet necessary technical standards. The report held both the company and officials in the Ministry of Energy responsible for the incident, which resulted in widespread power outages across multiple areas of Nouakchott for several days.

Mokhtar Ould Djeiy has served as Prime Minister since August 2024. Prior to this role, he held prominent state positions, including Director of the Presidential Office and Minister of Economy and Finance.
