Interception of Cruise Missile
The coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen announced on Saturday that it had intercepted and destroyed a “cruise” missile. The coalition stated that the projectile was launched by the Houthi group toward the Riyadh region in central Saudi Arabia. Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki, a spokesperson for the coalition forces, confirmed the incident in a post on the X platform. He wrote: “Interception and destruction of a cruise (Tawaf) missile launched by the Houthi militia towards the Riyadh region.” As of 06:10 GMT, no comment had been issued by the Yemeni Houthi group regarding Al-Maliki’s announcement.
Recent Escalation in Attacks
This event follows a series of recent aerial threats against Saudi territory. In the evening of Friday, Al-Maliki announced the interception and destruction of a drone in the Riyadh area, though he did not specify which entity launched it or the specific location it was targeting. Prior to this, the coalition had announced the interception and destruction of two ballistic missiles, claiming they were fired by the Houthi group toward the Najran region in southwestern Saudi Arabia. These incidents resulted in falling debris, alongside the destruction of a drone in the Makkah region in western Saudi Arabia.
Civil Defense Alerts and Previous Incidents
Earlier on Friday, the Saudi Civil Defense issued two early warnings regarding potential dangers in Najran before announcing that the threat had passed on both occasions, without clarifying the nature of the danger. On Thursday, the coalition announced the interception of a ballistic missile that it claimed the Houthis had fired toward Medina. At the same time, Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthi group, denied that the city had been targeted. The coalition also announced the destruction of a drone in the Eastern Region.
Ongoing Conflict Context
These developments occur amidst an intensification of missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, set against the backdrop of continued tension with the Houthi group, which controls the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other areas of the country. Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government in its confrontation with the Houthis.
