These remarks were delivered during the opening of the general debate for the eighty-first session of the UN General Assembly, which convened from September 22 to 26 at the organization’s headquarters in New York before resuming on September 28.
Addressing the assembly, Guterres highlighted that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) had issued provisional measures that are legally binding in the case concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza. He emphasized the urgent necessity for the United Nations to be permitted to carry out its mandates within the territory, stressing the imperative to protect UN staff members and humanitarian workers operating in the region.
