IRGC: Fires on Tankers in Hormuz Strait

5 November، 2026

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Thursday that fires had broken out on two oil tankers and a marine tugboat within the Hormuz Strait. The military branch attributed the incidents to the vessels attempting to navigate through “unauthorized routes.” According to the statement, one of the tankers collided with a sea mine while trying to cross a passage located south of the strait. Meanwhile, a fire erupted on another large oil tanker as it exited the path in the eastern part of the waterway.

Details of the Incident

The Revolutionary Guard clarified that the second tanker caught fire while exiting the designated corridor in the eastern section of the maritime passage. Subsequently, flames spread to a marine tugboat that had approached the second vessel in an attempt to assist in extinguishing the blaze. The guard emphasized that the incident was a direct result of the ships violating established navigation protocols by using paths not officially sanctioned for transit.

Warnings and Drone Interception

In its official statement, the Revolutionary Guard issued a stern warning regarding future transgressions in the strategic waterway. The text stated that any attempt to breach the law in the Hormuz Strait would “increase financial damages and political defeats for the United States.” Additionally, the guard reported that it had managed to control two Lucas-type drones, adding that they were now in its possession. As of the announcement, no immediate comment had been issued by the American side regarding the Iranian statement.

Strategic Context and Regional Tensions

The Hormuz Strait, situated between Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, remains one of the most critical strategic maritime passages globally. A significant volume of oil and gas exports from Gulf states flows through this channel to reach international markets. This incident occurs amidst heightened tensions following a conflict initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, 2026. Although a ceasefire was reached in April, confrontations between Washington and Tehran resumed in July. Diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the hostilities have currently stalled, leaving the region in a state of volatile uncertainty.
