Palestinian Journalist Asira Bushra Al-Taweel Endures Harsh Solitary Confinement Conditions

18 October، 2026

The Palestinian Prisoners Club confirmed on Sunday that imprisoned journalist Bushra Al-Taweel, 33, is facing harsh detention conditions in solitary confinement. Israeli authorities have maintained her isolation for approximately 50 days, characterized by frequent raids on her cell, continuous verbal abuse, and physical mistreatment.

According to a statement released by the club, these details emerged following a recent visit to Al-Taweel. She reported that her cell is subjected to repeated incursions by guards, during which she is beaten and sprayed with tear gas. The most recent incident occurred just two days prior to the visit. Despite the presence of surveillance cameras operating around the clock within her detention area, the occupation forces continue to harass and insult her without interruption.

Al-Taweel’s health has significantly deteriorated due to the harsh conditions. She suffers from dryness affecting her eyes, skin, and hands, as well as numbness in her extremities caused by the constant use of shackles. Prior to her transfer to solitary confinement, she was already suffering from scabies, a condition exacerbated by the denial of essential hygiene supplies and poor living standards.

Describing her daily life as extremely difficult, Al-Taweel stated that food rations are insufficient. She is forced to drink tap water that has turned yellow, indicating contamination. Furthermore, she lacks adequate clothing and the means to wash what she possesses. Her bedding is described as severely soiled and of poor quality, making it feel as though she is sleeping directly on the floor, compounded by an inadequate blanket.

The journalist revealed that she was transferred from Damoun Prison to the isolation unit at Ramlah Prison without any explanation. Although she signed documents on October 4, 2026, stating she was being moved to Damoun, she was unexpectedly relocated to the Oholi Oz facility in Be’er Sheva, where she remains detained. Authorities have also renewed her administrative detention order for an additional four months, continuing their targeted pursuit of the former prisoner and journalist.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club emphasized that Al-Taweel’s treatment reflects a broader escalation in systematic policies targeting female prisoners through administrative detention, isolation, and harassment. These measures deprive them of fundamental rights and violate their dignity and physical and mental integrity. The club called upon international human rights bodies, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross, to intervene immediately. They urged these organizations to investigate Al-Taweel’s detention conditions, end her isolation, ensure her protection and medical care, secure her release, and monitor ongoing violations against female prisoners in occupation jails.
