The United Nations Security Council issued a formal condemnation regarding the intensification of attacks launched by the Houthi group against Saudi Arabia. This diplomatic move coincides with a noticeable resurgence of military tensions between the two parties. The statement was read on Saturday by Jerome Bonfon, the French ambassador and president of the current Security Council session.
In his address, Bonfon expressed strong disapproval of the continued targeting of civilian infrastructure and vital energy facilities within the Kingdom. He highlighted that these actions have resulted in casualties among the civilian population, with a specific mention of injuries sustained by women and children. Members of the Council also voiced their profound concern over these hostilities, noting that such aggression poses a direct threat to the safety of non-combatants and jeopardizes stability across the entire region.
Responding to the situation, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized during his speech at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly that the security of the Gulf cannot be decoupled from the broader security of the Middle East and the world. He called for the establishment of regional arrangements that are both comprehensive and sustainable. Crucially, he stated that these frameworks must not be based on hegemony or the imposition of influence.
Prince Faisal described the incidents as “flagrant Iranian aggressions” that have affected the Kingdom and other nations in the area. He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s firm commitment to its full right to protect its sovereignty and national security. While welcoming the Security Council’s statement which denounced the Houthi attacks on the Kingdom and commercial vessels, the minister reiterated that Gulf security is an integral component of global stability.
