US Generals Warn of Military Exhaustion from Iran Conflict

1 September، 2026

Concerns regarding the long-term viability of the United States’ military engagement with Iran are intensifying within the highest ranks of the American armed forces. According to a report by The Washington Post, senior generals have expressed deep apprehension about the depletion of troops and ammunition, as well as the declining readiness of forces to address other potential threats. These warnings come amid an administration that has maintained secrecy regarding the true costs of the conflict and lacks a clear strategy or timeline for its conclusion.

The newspaper’s editorial board highlighted that high-ranking officers have raised serious alarms about the sustainability of wide-scale operations against Iran. In internal documents dated August 14, commanders across Europe, Asia, Latin America, along with the head of the Navy, formally registered their “disapproval” of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to extend troop deployments. While they affirmed their willingness to execute orders, this formal objection underscores significant internal resistance to the current trajectory of the war. The Pentagon spokesperson, Sean Barnet, described such disapprovals as routine occurrences but disputed the accuracy of the reported details without providing specific evidence to refute the claims.

The investigation, conducted by journalists Alex Horton and Tara Kopp, indicates that these military leaders fear the prolonged conflict will weaken the US capacity to handle emerging threats, including those potentially targeting American soil. The report notes that nearly a quarter of the Pentagon’s Reaper drone fleet has been utilized, and the sole aircraft carrier in the Pacific was redeployed to the Middle East earlier in the month. These moves have also sparked concern among Washington’s allies, who are witnessing the strain on American military resources.

The Washington Post criticized President Donald Trump for initiating a preemptive war without a convincing national interest justification provided six months prior. The editorial argues that the administration failed to secure congressional authorization or define a clear endgame. Instead, it suggests the President may have erroneously extrapolated from the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro that regime change in Tehran would be similarly straightforward. The newspaper concluded that the US is now trapped in a complex quagmire, with the administration seemingly hoping to delay addressing the Iranian file until after the midterm elections, thereby denying voters the information necessary to hold officials accountable for the war’s toll.
