A Screen Amidst the Ruins
Amidst the scattered tents that have become temporary homes for families who lost their houses or cannot return, a white screen has been erected in Gaza. For the children gathered there, the images flashing across it offer a stark contrast to the daily reality of shelling and rubble. They watch cartoon films, finding a rare moment of happiness in a landscape defined by displacement and damage.
The event is organized by a volunteer initiative called “Little Wings Cinema.” The goal is to create a space for joy within the harsh conditions of displacement. Volunteers are present, some with Palestinian flags and hearts painted on their faces, performing traditional dabke dances in folk costumes to entertain the young audience. The children sit close together in front of the screen, with some sitting directly on the ground, surrounded by the makeshift shelters that now house them.
The Scale of Displacement
The tents surrounding the screening are not an isolated phenomenon but rather a reflection of the broader humanitarian crisis in the strip. According to the latest report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), dated August 28, approximately 1.98 million Palestinians, representing 94 percent of Gaza’s population, require assistance with shelter and basic materials.
The UN agency highlighted the severity of the housing situation, noting that 58 percent of the population faces critical or catastrophic shelter needs. Furthermore, 84 percent of households are enduring severe restrictions in their living conditions. These constraints include inadequate protection against extreme heat, cold, and rain, underscoring the fragility of the current environment where even simple recreational activities like a movie screening represent significant efforts to maintain normalcy and hope.
