US President Donald Trump declared that Washington has reached a security arrangement with Denmark and Greenland regarding the polar territory. The announcement follows months of diplomatic tension between Washington and Copenhagen concerning the future status of the island. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the deal grants the United States “permanent control” over Greenland’s security. He emphasized that the agreement ensures Washington can take necessary actions to defend both the island and the US, describing the pact as long-term without a set expiration date.
Trump further noted that the arrangement prevents any nation designated as a competitor by the US from establishing military bases, maintaining a military presence, or executing sensitive investments in Greenland without written American consent. He indicated that the US will begin developing a larger military footprint on the island, citing its strategic importance to the US for over a century.
Sovereignty Remains Danish
Despite Trump’s description of permanent security control, authorities in Copenhagen and Nuuk firmly clarified that the agreement does not involve the transfer of sovereignty to the United States. The Danish government and Greenlandic leadership confirmed that Greenland will remain under Danish sovereignty. They stressed that the arrangement respects the right of the island’s inhabitants to self-determination.
The Danish government framed the new order as an effort to enhance security in the Arctic and North Atlantic within the framework of NATO alliance cooperation. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed hope that the deal would replace uncertainty with binding arrangements strengthening regional security. Meanwhile, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen stated that the agreement could serve shared security interests and support continued development on the island.
