Study Identifies New Treatment for Obesity-Related Sleep Apnea

A recent medical investigation has identified a potential treatment for obstructive sleep apnea among individuals suffering from obesity. The findings, published in JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery and reported by the Daily Mail, link the improvement of sleep breathing disorders to tirzepatide, a medication widely recognized under the brand name Mounjaro for weight management.

Obstructive sleep apnea is described as the most prevalent respiratory disorder occurring during sleep. It manifests when the airway becomes repeatedly blocked while the patient is asleep, causing breathing to stop and restart. This condition often results in loud snoring, gasping for air, and frequent awakenings throughout the night. To understand the efficacy of tirzepatide in treating this condition, researchers analyzed data from two clinical trials involving 469 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

Significant Reduction in Breathing Interruptions

The results indicated a marked improvement among participants who received tirzepatide. These patients lost approximately one-fifth of their body weight. Consequently, the frequency of breathing interruptions decreased by more than 20 episodes per hour. Notably, between 42 and 50 percent of those treated with the drug were able to eliminate obstructive sleep apnea entirely. In contrast, the percentage of patients achieving remission in the placebo group was roughly three times lower.

The study suggests that weight loss is the primary factor driving these improvements. Excess fat accumulation around the neck can narrow the airway, making it increasingly difficult to breathe comfortably during sleep. By reducing this adipose tissue, the medication helps open the airway and restore normal breathing patterns.

Limitations and Future Considerations

Despite the promising outcomes, the researchers clarified that tirzepatide should not be viewed as a replacement for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices, particularly for patients with severe cases. CPAP remains a fundamental treatment option, having been shown to reduce breathing interruptions by more than 30 episodes per hour in its users.

Furthermore, the study did not confirm whether the benefits of tirzepatide persist after discontinuation. There is a possibility that patients may regain weight once they stop taking the medication. Previous research indicates that regaining some weight after stopping weight-loss drugs is common, which could potentially lead to a recurrence of sleep apnea symptoms. This highlights the need for long-term monitoring and further studies to determine the sustainability of this treatment approach.
