UNRWA Health Chief Warns Gaza Is Becoming Uninhabitable

13 October، 2026

Gaza Transforms Into Uninhabitable Zone

Akihiko Seta, the director of the health department at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating humanitarian and medical conditions in the Gaza Strip. In an online interview with the Japanese news agency Jiji Press, Seta emphasized that the territory is increasingly turning into a place where human life cannot be sustained.

Seta pointed out that the living environment for residents has completely collapsed. He noted that the implementation of the ceasefire agreement on October 10, 2025, did not eliminate the war’s repercussions. Instead, humanitarian and health challenges continue to intensify despite the cessation of hostilities. The Israeli military operations, which began in October 2023, have resulted in the deaths of more than 74 thousand Palestinians, according to estimates cited in the report.

Occupation Control and Displacement Crisis

The reconstruction efforts remain sluggish as Israeli forces maintain control over approximately 70 percent of the Gaza Strip’s area. This presence exceeds the zones specified in the ceasefire agreement, effectively confining around two million Palestinians within the remaining territory. Most of these displaced individuals are living in tents that lack basic survival necessities.

Health System Under Siege

The crisis in the healthcare sector is worsening due to persistent shortages of medical supplies and restrictions on their entry. These constraints severely limit the capacity of health facilities to meet the population’s needs. The deterioration of living conditions has led to the spread of skin diseases and other infectious illnesses. Basic services continue to decline, making it difficult to provide a safe health environment for displaced persons, thereby deepening the humanitarian emergency in Gaza.
