Allegations of Massive Military Support
Eritrea has formally accused the United Arab Emirates of supplying a significant volume of military equipment to Ethiopia during the current year. Yemane Gbre Meskel, the Eritrean Minister of Information, stated that Ethiopian forces received 365 military cargo shipments from the UAE within the first nine months of 2026. These allegations were published on his official account on the platform X, marking a sharp escalation in diplomatic rhetoric between Asmara and Addis Ababa.
Context of Regional Tensions
The accusations emerge against a backdrop of intensifying hostility between the two nations. Relations have deteriorated significantly due to the resumption of armed conflict in northern Ethiopia. Both governments have engaged in a cycle of mutual accusations regarding military intervention and support for armed groups operating within each other’s borders. The claim of extensive foreign military aid serves as a central pillar in Eritrea’s narrative, framing the Ethiopian government’s actions as externally driven rather than domestically motivated.
Critique of Ethiopian Priorities
Minister Gbre Meskel directed his criticism toward the Prosperity Party, the ruling political entity in Ethiopia. He argued that the administration has prioritized military expansion over the improvement of living conditions for its citizens and the enhancement of regional stability. According to the minister, the Ethiopian government’s focus reflects a deliberate choice to elevate political and military ambitions above the basic needs of the population.
In his post, Gbre Meskel highlighted financial data to support his argument. He asserted that the Ethiopian government has spent unprecedented sums on its military sector over the past three years. Furthermore, he claimed that over the last eight years, the regime has accumulated more than $30 billion in external financial assistance from various multilateral and bilateral donors. Despite this influx of capital, the minister pointed out that approximately 21.4 million people across the country remain in dire conditions, relying heavily on humanitarian aid for survival.
Characterization of Regime Intentions
The Eritrean minister characterized the Ethiopian leadership as obsessed with an “unparalleled military expenditure spree.” He described the receipt of 365 UAE cargo deliveries in just three quarters of 2026 as evidence of the regime’s involvement in multiple domestic conflicts and acts of regional destabilization. By juxtaposing the massive military imports and financial aid against the widespread humanitarian crisis, Gbre Meskel concluded that the priorities of the Ethiopian government are clear: pursuing reckless wars driven by delusions of grandeur at the expense of public welfare and enduring peace.
