Iran Escalates Attacks on Shipping in Strait of Hormuz, Targeting Six Vessels in Single Day

13 October، 2026

Surge in Maritime Hostilities

The frequency of Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters has reached its peak since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28. According to data from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and international maritime security sources, six vessels were targeted within a single day. This escalation marks a significant intensification of pressure on global energy supply routes.

Data indicates that more than 18 commercial ships were targeted during the first twelve days of October alone. Between October 5 and October 12, at least fourteen incidents involving attacks, attempted attacks, or interceptions were recorded. This recent spike follows a pattern of increasing aggression throughout the summer months, coinciding with renewed confrontations between Tehran and Washington in July.

Monthly Attack Statistics

During July, at least twelve attacks were registered against oil tankers and cargo ships. The number rose to ten vessels targeted in August, including oil and liquefied natural gas tankers near Fujairah in the UAE and Sur in Oman. By September, the count of targeted ships increased to eighteen. These attacks occurred alongside operational shifts by the United States and Gulf states, which began transferring oil from ship to ship using smaller vessels before loading cargoes onto larger tankers in safer zones.

Iranian Justifications and Warnings

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) characterized these US-led transfer operations as “illegal oil smuggling” and an attempt to break the blockade of the Hormuz Strait. In response, the IRGC expanded its operational scope to include supply ships, tugs, and small tankers across the Gulf. The Guard claimed that some targeted vessels suffered explosions due to collisions with naval mines, which it described as being laid illegally in routes deemed unsafe by Tehran.

Tehran asserts that its escalation is a direct response to what it describes as an “American naval blockade.” The Iranian government has warned ships against using navigation routes that do not align with its positions or crossing the area after the closure of navigation and identification systems. These measures reflect a broader strategy to disrupt maritime traffic and challenge Western influence in the region.
