Inter Milan Reclaims Top Spot After Late Drama Against Fiorentina
Inter Milan secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on Sunday, moving back to the top of the Serie A standings. The win came in the eighth round of the Italian league, with Inter scoring both of their goals during stoppage time. This result maintains Inter’s unbeaten record for the season and allows them to regain the lead in the table based on goal difference.
The reigning champions faced a difficult evening at San Siro despite controlling much of the play and creating numerous chances. Their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by the outstanding performance of Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea, who made several crucial saves to keep Fiorentina in the match. Prior to this game, Inter had regained some confidence following a 1-0 Champions League victory against Shakhtar Donetsk, but they appeared poised to stumble again in this domestic fixture.
Fiorentina took the lead in the 65th minute when Alex Jimenez scored with a powerful strike that caught Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel off guard. De Gea continued his impressive display by denying further attempts from the home side. However, Inter’s persistence finally paid off in the dying moments of the game. French forward Marcus Thuram equalized in the first minute of stoppage time, bringing his season tally in the league to five goals.
As the match seemed destined for a draw, the referee awarded Inter a penalty in the seventh minute of added time after a foul on Thuram inside the box. Polish striker Piotr Zielinski stepped up to convert the spot-kick successfully, securing a vital last-minute win for Inter.
With this victory, Inter Milan accumulated 22 points, tying with Lazio, who defeated Parma 2-1 on Saturday. Inter reclaimed the top position in Serie A through superior goal difference and continues to compete strongly for the title. The club celebrated the result on social media, sharing an image with the caption “MAMMA BUTTA LA PASTA” alongside their colors and logo, posted on October 25, 2026.
