Strategic Expansion in Southern West Bank
Israeli media outlets have disclosed a comprehensive plan to establish eight new settlement outposts in the Mount Hebron region, located in the southern part of the occupied West Bank. The project involves the creation of two community settlements and six agricultural farms, marking a significant move to expand and consolidate Israeli presence in the area.
Collaboration Between Government and NGOs
According to the Hebrew website Olam Ketan, which maintains close ties with settler groups, the initiative is being executed through a joint effort involving the Settlement Directorate within the Defense Ministry, the military itself, and the Amana settlement movement. The stated objective of the project is to enhance the security of existing settlements, settlers, and the roads connecting them.
Geopolitical Context and Military Operations
The announcement coincides with an escalation in Israeli military operations across the West Bank, particularly in the city of Hebron. Since last Friday, widespread military measures have been implemented in the region. This follows an attack by two Palestinians on an Israeli military checkpoint, which resulted in the death of two soldiers and injuries to three others. In response, the Israeli army imposed closures on both Hebron and the neighboring town of Halhul.
Historical Background and International Stance
Since October 2023, the Israeli military and settlers have intensified their actions in the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem. These activities encompass killings, arrests, home demolitions, arson against mosques and vehicles, confiscation of agricultural lands, prevention of farmers from accessing their fields, and the displacement of Palestinian communities. Concurrently, there has been a rapid acceleration in settlement expansion.
Data provided by the Israeli anti-settlement organization Peace Now indicates that the number of settlers in the West Bank exceeds half a million, with an additional figure for those residing in settlements established on land within occupied Jerusalem. The United Nations and the international community maintain that these settlements are illegal under international law and continue to call for an end to the expansion efforts.
