U.S. Warns Against Travel to Saudi Airports Amid Houthi Threats

3 November، 2026

Security Alert Issued for Saudi Airports

The United States has issued a formal security warning to its government employees and citizens residing in or traveling to Saudi Arabia, citing imminent risks at the Kingdom’s airports. The alert, published by the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh on X, follows a series of hostile actions attributed to the Houthi movement against Saudi infrastructure.

In a statement released on Monday, the embassy detailed that Iranian-backed Houthis have engaged in hostilities targeting civilian airports and critical infrastructure within Saudi territory. These attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and caused severe disruptions to air travel. The diplomatic mission emphasized that these hostile acts possess the potential to escalate rapidly and extend beyond the immediate areas currently affected.

Restrictions on Government Personnel

Effective October 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of State ordered non-emergency government employees and their family members to depart Saudi Arabia due to safety concerns. For those essential personnel remaining in the country, strict new protocols are now in place. U.S. government staff working in the Kingdom must obtain special authorization from the Chief of Mission before utilizing any airport facilities in Saudi Arabia. This measure was implemented in direct response to recent missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks on local aviation hubs.

Advice for American Citizens

The embassy urged all U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution if they choose to use airports in Saudi Arabia. Travelers were advised to anticipate potential scenarios including direct attacks on airport facilities, sudden airspace closures, flight cancellations, and broader travel disruptions. The guidance specifically recommended that individuals verify their flight departure status directly with both the airline and the airport management prior to heading to the terminal.

Regional Context and Diplomatic Talks

This warning comes amidst a continuous military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni Houthi group since July. The conflict has seen repeated Houthi strikes on civil aviation facilities and energy installations across the Kingdom. On Monday, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart, Pete Hegseth. During the call, they discussed the ongoing aggression by what Riyadh termed “terrorist militias,” alongside defensive cooperation between the two nations and efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a military coalition since March 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Houthi movement, which has controlled the capital Sanaa and several other provinces since September 2014.
