London: Bill Gates has declared that no government in the world is currently prepared for the profound societal transformations that artificial intelligence will bring. The Microsoft co-founder issued this warning regarding future risks, marking a significant shift from his previously optimistic stance on the technology. He now highlights specific threats to employment, concerns over cyberattacks, and the potential for addiction among users.
In an interview with Reuters, Gates stated, “I don’t think any government is paying it the level of attention it deserves.” Despite these reservations, he emphasized that the technology holds immense potential to assist the world’s poorest populations, provided it is managed correctly and access is distributed equally. To support this goal, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced plans to spend at least one billion dollars over the next two years to expand AI access.
Gates revealed that he has discussed his concerns with global leaders, including US President Donald Trump and his team. He also indicated an intention to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. Reiterating his assessment, Gates said, “Governments are far behind in this area.” Nevertheless, both Gates and his foundation hope that AI will help narrow the gap between the rich and the poor rather than widening it.
The foundation’s spending plan, which is part of its previously announced strategy to spend nine billion dollars annually, will be allocated to partners working in education, healthcare, and agriculture. A key objective is to help build the data foundations for AI, such as ensuring large language models function in every language spoken by people. Regarding healthcare, Gates noted, “In health, you cannot overstate the potential,” citing support for frontline care workers and the discovery of new drugs and vaccines.
However, he stressed that governments must collaborate to avoid problems, comparing the emergence of AI to disaster films. “There are all kinds of movies where aliens come, and magically the United States and China and everyone join together to solve the problem. AI is somewhat like that alien intelligence. It actually happened, and it would be better for us to act as shown in those movies,” he added.
