Critical Infrastructure at Risk
The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip issued a stark warning on Thursday, highlighting that hospitals are facing an immediate threat of electrical generator failure. The ministry stated that the engines are on the verge of burning out and suffering permanent damage due to the total depletion of operational oils. This crisis jeopardizes the continuous power supply required for vital medical departments across the region.
Technical Conditions and Mechanical Strain
In a press statement, the ministry explained that engineering teams are currently operating under complex technical conditions. These teams are working tirelessly to monitor the generators and attempt to keep them running to ensure that essential hospital sections continue to receive electricity. However, the ministry emphasized that the continuous strain placed on these units has pushed them to a highly dangerous mechanical stage.
The generators have been forced to run for thousands of hours without the necessary provision of oils or required maintenance. This severe neglect has led to a situation where the equipment is at high risk of sudden withdrawal from service. The ministry clarified that if the engine motors burn out due to the absence of lubricating oils, they will lose the ability to operate permanently. Even if oil supplies are provided later, the damage will be irreversible, significantly exacerbating the severity of the crisis affecting health facilities.
Urgent Calls for Intervention
The ministry renewed its appeals to relevant authorities to intervene immediately and urgently provide the necessary resources to protect the remaining generators from total collapse. Officials warned that the continuation of this crisis threatens the hospitals’ capacity to secure electricity for vital sections and continue providing medical services. The situation is particularly critical given the heavy reliance of hospitals on electrical generators to power vital departments and medical devices.
These include operating rooms, intensive care units, and patient resuscitation machines. The potential failure of these generators poses a direct threat to the continuity of medical care for patients and the injured. Furthermore, it places additional challenges before health staff who are already navigating difficult circumstances within the Gaza health sector. The ministry stressed that the loss of power to these specific areas could have fatal consequences, underscoring the urgency of the current infrastructure emergency.
