Israeli media reports confirm that five critical desalination facilities have ceased operations following what officials described as a “mysterious phenomenon.” The disruption has triggered immediate instability in water distribution networks across the territory. The affected facilities include Ashdod, Ashkelon, Shorok 1, Shorok 2, and Palmachim. In response to the sudden loss of capacity, authorities implemented emergency conservation measures. These restrictions include halting irrigation for agricultural fields in the southern regions and suspending the watering of public gardens in several municipalities.

Scientific Investigation and Root Causes

Preliminary investigations conducted by researchers at the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute indicate that the primary cause is a significant increase in the turbidity of Mediterranean seawater. This cloudiness is believed to result from a widespread proliferation of microscopic algae. Experts suspect the source of this biological surge is the Nile Delta region. Satellite imagery supports this hypothesis, showing extensive algal growth in the delta area. Researchers note that the specific algae involved are exceptionally small, allowing them to bypass certain filtration systems installed at the intake points of the desalination plants.

To determine the exact species and assess potential toxicity, scientists are collecting samples from various coastal locations, including the Ashkelon coast and the Palmachim area. Genetic analysis is underway to characterize the organisms and verify if they produce harmful substances. The Institute’s Director General, Alon Zasak, stated that the arrival of algae from the Delta is not unexpected. He noted that the Ashkelon plant, being the largest facility in the south, was the first to shut down. The spread of the phenomenon is influenced by local factors such as water depth, as different plants draw from varying depths of the sea.

Environmental Factors and Strategic Concerns

Professor David Katz from the University of Haifa’s Faculty of Environmental Sciences explained that while algae are constantly present in the Nile Delta, the current situation is distinguished by the massive volume and wave-like movement reaching the shores. He added that the high turbidity is compounded by sand and sewage water, creating a perfect storm that overwhelmed the southern plants. Experts emphasize that there is no practical method to completely prevent such algal blooms. However, their impact can be mitigated through early monitoring via satellite imagery and tracking water currents.

The crisis has highlighted vulnerabilities in the national water infrastructure. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen asserted that the water sector remains robust and that measures were taken to ensure continuous supply despite the disruptions. Nevertheless, experts warn that the incident underscores the urgent need to strengthen water reserves. They recommend increasing desalination production while preserving natural sources, such as the Sea of Galilee and groundwater aquifers, specifically for emergency scenarios.
