Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono delivered a statement before the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing that the Palestinian cause continues to serve as a critical “test of human conscience.” He reiterated Indonesia’s firm commitment to supporting the Palestinian people until they achieve their right to self-determination and establish an independent, sovereign state.
Allegations of International Law Violations
Sugiono argued that international law is currently facing blatant violations in Gaza and the West Bank. He described the current situation as regressing the world to a period he characterized as “pre-1945,” prior to the establishment of the modern international legal system, the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Geneva Conventions. According to the minister, this regression undermines the foundational principles of global governance.
Historical Context and Anti-Colonial Stance
The Indonesian foreign minister highlighted his country’s historical experience with colonialism as a basis for its diplomatic stance. He stated that Indonesia understands the meaning of fighting against colonial rule and living in a world where international law is weak and “might makes right.” This historical perspective shapes Jakarta’s consistent support for the Palestinian struggle.
Call for Multilateral System Accountability
Sugiono stressed that the Palestinian issue is not merely a regional crisis but a test of the multilateral system’s ability to adhere to the principles it was founded upon. He called on the international community to uphold these values, especially during times when they are most needed. Indonesia reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution based on international law standards, insisting that justice and sovereignty must be restored to the Palestinian people.
